Snake River Conspiracy (SRC) is an American industrial rock band. It was founded in 1996 in San Francisco, California, United States, by Eric Valentine and Jason Slater.[1] The band found modest success with their debut album, Sonic Jihad (2000), but attempts to make a follow up album were marred by multiple inter-personal disputes and line-up changes, before Slater ultimately decided to put the band on semi-hiatus in November 2006 to focus on his production career.

Slater quietly restarted Snake River Conspiracy in 2009 and attempted to make progress on a new album until his death in December 2020.[2][3][4] In 2022, Tobey Torres and Mitchell Doran announced that they would be releasing new Snake River Conspiracy music in 2023.[5]

History

The band was composed of musicians from different bands. The band was founded as a project of Eric Valentine and Jason Slater, former member of Third Eye Blind. After forming, the band hired Tobey Torres, an exotic dancer, to be the band's singer. The band was initially signed to Interscope Records in 1998 on the strength of a two-song demo, and shortly after signing to the label Valentine opted out of the band to focus on his music production career.[1] Problems at Interscope led to the band moving to Reprise Records,[1][6] where The band's debut album, Sonic Jihad, was released in June 2000. The band found success in the UK with their cover of "How Soon Is Now?" by The Smiths, which was reportedly praised by Morrissey as "a better version than ours!",[7] and reached number 83 on the UK Singles Chart.[8][9] However, Sonic Jihad was ultimately a commercial failure, and only reached number 36 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.[10] Slater blamed the album's failure on Reprise's inability to properly promote the album on MTV and radio, but also attributed some of the blame to the album's production and sound.[11]

In October 2002, Snake River Conspiracy parted ways with Reprise Records, owing to low sales of Sonic Jihad.[12] Afterwards, the band attempted to work on a follow up album, which Slater described as different to Sonic Jihad. However, progress on the album was marred by interpersonal disputes and line-up changes, including the departure of drummer Bobby Hewitt in June 2003[13] and Tobey Torres in June 2004, when she was replaced by Martina Axen, formerly the drummer and backup singer of Drain STH.[14] Following an acrimonious split with Axen in August 2005, Torres re-joined the band in June 2006 but left again in September 2006.[15] In November 2006, Slater put Snake River Conspiracy on semi-hiatus to focus on his production career.[16][17][18][19][20][21] Slater began quietly working on new Snake River Conspiracy material in 2009,[11] and continued to work on the album throughout the 2010s. In 2016 Tobey Torres and Mitchell Doran formed a new band called Mojave Phone Booth, and Slater later reconnected with Torres again through Doran. Snake River Conspiracy planned to release an album sometime in 2014, as well as release a vinyl version of Sonic Jihad, but due to Slater's health struggles the album's progress slowed. On December 9, 2020, Slater died of liver failure, effectively ending the band.[22][4]

In July 2022, Torres and Doran launched an Instagram account for the band, saying that new Snake River Conspiracy music will be released in 2023.[5]
