Rabbi Yosef Bittón is an Argentinian-born community rabbi and the former Chief Rabbi of Uruguay.[3][4][2][6][7]

Biography

Early life and education

Rabbi Yosef Bitton is half Syrian, half Moroccan as his grandparents came from Tetouan, Morocco and Damascus, Syria. He was born in Argentina to Argentinian parents.[6][5]

Rabbi Yosef Bitton received his ordination from Israel's Rabbinate and Dayanut ordination from Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef.[8] Yosef Bitton furthered his career by pursuing academic studies at Yeshiva University as well as at Ben Gurion and Bar-Ilan, where he got his first degree in the Hebrew language, Biblical studies, and Talmud. He also studied at Hebrew University and in the doctoral department at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.[3][4][6][9][10]

Rabbinical career

Rabbi Yosef Bitton spent above 25 years as a community rabbi in Buenos Aires, Montevideo and currently in the United States, where he is the rabbi of the Congregation Shaare Rachamim, belonging to the UMJCA in the Mashadi community of Great Neck, New York.[3][4][2][6][10]

He served as the Rabbi of Templo Chalom from 1985-1990 and rabbi of Congregation Agudat Dodim from 1992-1996, both large Sephardic congregations in Buenos Aires, Argentina. [11]

In 1998, he returned to South America as Chief Rabbi of Uruguay where he was spiritual leader to over 15,000 families for four years.

From 2002-2003, he moved to Atlanta where he was Rabbi of Congregation Or VeShalom. [11]

In 2004, he moved to New York where he began working with Congregation Shaare Rachamim. [11]

Published works

Books written by Rabbi Yosef Bitton

His first book was A Talmudic analysis of the story of Cinderella.  

His best-known book is Awesome creation [12], an analysis of the first three verses of Genesis, Genesis Chapter 1, verses 1-3. This book has been translated into Spanish and Portuguese, and has received coverage in multiple sources [4][2][13][14][15][16].

In 2018, he published Forgotten Giants, the story of 26 Sephardic Rabbis, before and after the expulsion from Spain. [17] He also completed a book on creation called Dinosaurs in the Bible, on Genesis Chapter 1, Verses 20-22 [18] [19].  The book has been published in Portuguese and soon to be published in English and Spanish.
