Star Wreck Roleplaying Game is an English-language role-playing game (RPG) published in Finland by Energia Productions that is set in the universe of the Star Wreck fan films.[1][2][3] It was first released at Ropecon in 2006.

Description

The game is, in addition to being a parody of the numerous Star Trek roleplaying games, also playable on its own. Its rule mechanics are built to emulate the setting of the films, with experienced characters becoming more heroically incompetent instead of getting better at their tasks as is the case in most mainstream games.

Star Wreck characters have Inability scores (Stupidity, Obliviousness, Clumsiness, Repulsiveness and Weakness) that they have to overcome in order to succeed at a given task instead of ability scores that measure a character's strengths. As opposed to character classes, the game has four general archetypes that correspond with various characters from the movies. They are Incompetent Idiot (Captain Pirk), Annoying Nerd (Info), Frustrated Grouch (Lt. Swagger) and Psychotic Loud-mouth (Lt. Dwarf).

Publication history

In 1996, Samuli Torssonen produced Star Wreck, the first in a series of Finnish films parodying Star Trek. In 2006, Energia Productions released a compilation DVD, Star Wreck: Legacy, and as a cross-promotion, hired Finnish game designer Mike Pohjola (Myrskyn aika, Tähti, Age of the Tempest) to create Star Wreck: The Role-Playing Game, an RPG based on the Star Wreck films.[4] Since the game would be released internationally, the decision was made to release it in English rather than Finnish.[5] It was first played at the Finnish game convention Ropecon in 2006,[5] and was subsequently released for sale.

In August 2007 the game was licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-ShareAlike license and made available for free download.[6]

Reception

In 2006, Star Trek role-playing game designer Kenneth Hite called Star Wreck the second best licensed role-playing game of the year.[7]
