Sanuki (さぬき市, Sanuki-shi) is a city in eastern Kagawa Prefecture, Japan with a population of 46,723.[2] The city lies just east of the prefecture capital, Takamatsu. Sanuki stretches from the Seto Inland Sea in the north to the Sanuki Mountains and Tokushima Prefecture in the south.
The city was created in 2002 by merging five former towns in western Ōkawa District (since dissolved): Shido, Tsuda, Nagao, Sangawa and Ōkawa.[3][4]
Ōkubo-ji, the 88th and final temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage is within the city, also famous for Shido-ji and Nagao-ji. Nagao-ji holds Shamisen-mochitsuki, an annual New Year's event on January 2.[citation needed]
