Sabah FM (formerly known as Radio Sabah and Radio Malaysia Sabah and stylised as SABAH fm) is a Malay language radio station operated by Radio Televisyen Malaysia serving as the main radio station of the state of Sabah. It was launched on 9 November 1955 and became part of the Radio Malaysia network on 16 September 1963, when Sabah formed the Federation of Malaysia with Malaya, Sarawak and Singapore. The station covers the whole of Sabah and neighbouring Federal Territory of Labuan with a 24 hours broadcast which airs Malaysian and international music.
History of Sabah radio broadcasting[edit]
The history of Sabah radio broadcasting began with telephone radio commentary for horse race in Jesselton, North Borneo (Now Kota Kinabalu) in 1939. In the early 1950s, Mr. Bradley conducted radio test broadcast from his home in English, Malay and Chinese languages, which received encouraging response from the locals and support from the Colonial Government. Radio Sabah began test broadcasting in 1952, before being officially launched on 9 November 1955. At that time, it was aired in English, Malay, Chinese and Kadazan languages and transmitted from a temporary building in Signal Hill near the Atkinson Clock Tower. Radio Sabah moved its headquarters to Jalan Tuaran in 1962 and became a part of the Radio Malaysia network, when Sabah was admitted as a member state of the newly established Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963.[1][2]
Radio Sabah's headquarters would remain at Jalan Tuaran until 2012, when it moved to and began to air from the newly-built Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Integrated Complex (Malay: Kompleks Bersepadu Kementerian Komunikasi dan Multimedia) at Jalan Lintas off Jalan Kepayan.[3]
