A recreation reserve is a type of New Zealand protected area. Many provide public access to coastlines, lakes and rivers.[1]

Most Recreation Reserves are smaller than 1000 hectares, but some are much larger. Te Paki in Northland covers nearly 19,000 hectares of coastal landscape.
