Mark Chasan is a digital media pioneer,[1] lawyer,[2] merchant banker, entrepreneur,[3] regenerative developer,[4] and author.[5] He is known for founding eMusic, the first digital media streaming and distribution company,[6] and Webcentral, one of the first cloud hosting companies.[7] Chasan has been instrumental in creating new financial models for a process driven approach to liquidity and value creation utilizing a private-to-public strategy.[1]
Currently, Chasan is the Chairman and CEO of Transformative,[8] a consulting firm focused on eco-social projects, and AWE Global,[9] a developer of health-focused sustainable and integrated workspaces.
Early life and education
Mark Chasan was born in Los Angeles, California, to Fred Chasan, a medical doctor,[10] and Roslyn "Roz" Chasan (née Lefkowitz),[11] an attorney.[12] His brothers are Jeff Chasan and Paul Chasan.[13] At age 10, Mark started playing drums and became a professional musician at age 14. He worked his way through college playing music and as a studio drummer.
He graduated with both a Bachelor of Laws and a Juris Doctorate[14] in 1985 from the College of Law at Western State University and became a lawyer[2] in Los Angeles.
Business career
In 1985, Chasan opened his law practice in Los Angeles, running it until 1995 when he founded eMusic,[15] the world's first online digital music distribution[16] and media streaming company.[17] Due to the rapid growth of eMusic, Chasan founded one of the first cloud co-hosting, and co-location facilities known as Webcentral[18] to serve the increasing computing demands.[7] Webcentral continued to add customers, eventually providing cloud hosting services to Caltrans, Re/Max, and AudioNet/Broadcast.com. In 1997, Webcentral was acquired by Interworld Communications and in 1999 Chasan merged eMusic with Goodnoise, Inc. to form eMusic.com in a transaction ultimately taking the company public on the Nasdaq, trading under the symbol EMUS.[6]
After eMusic's initial public offering and Webcentral's acquisition, Chasan became a professional angel investor[19] and leader in IBM's digital media consulting division. Later, he co-founded a technology fund, Publex Ventures,[1] which specialized in accelerating the growth of early-stage companies with public exits.
After exiting Publex Ventures, Chasan founded Transformative in 2005, a consulting company designed to help build eco-social impact businesses,[20] and AWE Global, a development company for sustainable and regenerative communities.[4][21][22][23][24][25]
Chasan has appeared regularly in media publications such as Billboard,[26] HuffPost[27] and Planetary Experts[28] as well as spoken at conferences such as BTOES,[29] UNR,[30] Sustainatopia,[20] and Clean Tech Innovation & Growth[31] on topics ranging from cleantech, renewable energy, agroforestry, digital media, cryptocurrencies, and blockchain to natural capital, regenerative economy, and entrepreneurship.
In 2022, Chasan published a book titled Living in AWE, which became the top selling book in environmental economics on Amazon.[5][32]
