The Malta Mathematical Society (MMS) is a mathematical society based in Malta, whose aim is to increase the awareness and popularity of mathematics among the Maltese populace. It organises lectures and various events open to the general public.

History[edit]

The MMS was first formed in 1998. The first official society activity was a talk delivered by Ms Cettina Gauci Pulo (also one of the founders of the society), assistant lecturer at the University of Malta Junior College, and was entitled Discovering Fractals. The first general meeting was held on January 5th, 1999. The first committee was composed of the following members: Prof. Joseph Muscat (President), Audrienne Cutajar Bezzina, Cettina Gauci Pulo, Dr. James L. Borg and Jill Kirkstadt.[1][better source needed] The society was responsible for the foundation of the Malta Mathematics Olympiad, which nowadays is in its 10th edition[needs update] and is independent from the society.[1][2][3][4][unreliable source?]

In 2006, Anthony Licari gave a talk organized by the society titled "A mathematical analysis of literature".[5]

After nearly a decade of inactivity, plans to reform the society were set in motion by a group of students, most notably by Luke Collins, with the guidance of Prof. Joseph Muscat.[1][better source needed] Current members active in the society are Luke Collins, Jake Xuereb, Ethan James German, Jonathan Farrugia, Adriana Baldacchino, Juan Scerri and Giorgio Grigolo. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the MMS gained a significant online following with various events being held over video conferencing.

In summer 2021, a short introductory course on differential geometry was held, among other fun activities such as a pub quiz. In November 2021, a debate titled "Debate: Is Mathematics an Art or a Science?". This was the last event held before the first Annual General Meeting (AGM).

2021 AGM[edit]

In December 2021 the society's first AGM since the society's reformation in 2019 was held.[6] The members of the executive were elected as follows:

  • President: Ethan James German
  • Secretary: Giorgio Grigolo
  • Treasurer: Luke Colliins
  • Public Relations Officer: Marietta Galea
  • Events Manager: Maria Aquilina

The election was held as outlined by the statutes of the MMS[7]

Recent Activity[edit]

The society has recently organised many regular talks, these include:

  • The Annual Christmas talk - "From the Art of Counting to the Art of Colouring in Mathematics" by Prof Peter Borg[8]
  • A quick fire talk session, consisting of 3 talks:
    • "Rubik's Cubes - with a sprinkle of Combinatorics and Group Theory" - Giorgio Grigolo[9]
    • "1^k + 2^k + ... + n^k: Exciting and Atypical Methods" - Alexander Farrugia[10]
    • "Algebraic Topology: From Mugs to Donuts"- Ethan James German[11]
  • A Talk on Ancient Greek Mathematics-Andrew Debono Cauchi

The society has also started a series of seminars regarding the use of mathematics in different areas of research.
