Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor (born 4 June 2021) is the daughter of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. She is a granddaughter of King Charles III and is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne.[1]

Birth, family and infancy

Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, on 4 June 2021 at 11:40 PDT (18:40 UTC). Her birth along with her name were announced two days later. She is named after her paternal great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was called "Lilibet" by her family,[1][2] and her paternal grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales.[3] Her nickname is "Lili".[4] She has an older brother, Archie.[3]

Mountbatten-Windsor descends paternally from the British royal family and has mixed-race ancestry, having African and European maternal lineage.[5] She has dual citizenship of the United States and the United Kingdom.[6] While Frogmore Cottage in the Home Park of Windsor Castle is the official residence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the United Kingdom, the family resides primarily in Montecito, California.[7]

In December 2021, the first photograph of Mountbatten-Windsor was released to the public as a Christmas card from her parents.[8][9]

Mountbatten-Windsor met her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and grandfather King Charles III, then the Prince of Wales, in-person for the first time when the family traveled to London for the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II in June 2022.[10][9]

Titles, styles, and succession

Mountbatten-Windsor is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne (eighth at the time of her birth) and is the highest-ranked individual in the current line of succession to have been born overseas.[6][11][12]

While her name has never been formally styled with a title, at the time of her birth she was entitled to use the courtesy title "Lady" before her given name as the daughter of a duke.[13][14] Upon the accession of her grandfather King Charles III on 8 September 2022, she also legally became a princess of the United Kingdom.[15][16] This entitlement comes from letters patent issued by King George V in 1917, which state that the children of the sons of any sovereign of the United Kingdom “shall have and at all times hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of Royal Highness with their titular dignity of prince or princess.”[17] As is the case with her brother, Archie, it is uncertain whether she will use a title, at least while primarily residing with her parents in the United States.[18]
