Kano State Polytechnic is a Nigerian Tertiary Institution located in Kano,[2] North-Western Nigeria. Established in 1975, which is regulated by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) the polytechnic is made up of five schools(faculties) : School of Technology, School of Management Studies, School of Environmental Studies, School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development, School of General Studies.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF KANO STATE POLYTECHNIC

The Polytechnic was first established in 1976 to bring six different schools hitherto controlled independently by related ministries in the State under one administrative umbrella. Some of these schools were started as far back as 1970, in the wake of urgent Educational and Manpower needs in Kano State. By 1978, another Educational Organization emerged, replacing Kano State Polytechnic. The new organization, Kano State Institute for Higher Education, established under Edict no. 18 of 1978 by the then Military Administration, had eight post-secondary institutions spread across the state. In 1983, the 1978 Edict establishing the Institute for Higher Education was replaced by the defunct Civilian Administration of the Second Republic. In its place, the Ministry of Higher Education was created, and two educational institutions emerged; Kano State Polytechnic and the Institute of Education. However, the new structure did not last long as the Military Government that took over upon the collapse of the Second Republic reverted the institution to its former structure. In July 1987, a new Edict splitting the Institute for Higher Education into three was signed into Law giving birth to three autonomous institutions, namely, Kano State Polytechnic, Kano State College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies and College of Education. The emergent Polytechnic had five constituent units: School of Technology; School of Management Studies, School of Social & Rural Development; Audu Bako School of Agriculture and Aminu Kano School of Islamic Legal Studies. The year 2002 marked yet another tinkering with the structure of the Polytechnic, as two of its units were granted autonomous status, i.e., Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta and Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies, Kano. The remaining three units were further augmented by adding a new unit that emerged as the School of Environmental Studies, Gwarzo. In 2011 School of General Studies was established with its permanent site at Sheikh Ja’afar Adam Road. Sequel to the directive by the State Executive Council, the Kano State Institute of Information Technology, Kura, in October 2020, was taken over by Kano State Polytechnic. Thus, the Polytechnic is presently composed of six Unit Schools, namely; School of Environmental Studies, School of General Studies, School of Management Studies, School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development, Rano, Kano State Institute of Information Technology, Kura and School of Technology, which are under a single Central Administration Unit that coordinates, directs and controls the general Administration and ensures execution of all Policy matters.
