Kamran Afshar Naderi is an Iranian architect, architectural critic, painter and artist.
Biography
Kamran Afshar Naderi was born in 1959 in Mashhad, Iran. He started his studies in architecture in 1977 in Tehran university. In 1980 he moved to Italy and resumed his studies at the University of Genoa, where he graduated in the field of architecture. His thesis concerned the methodologies of design in the ancient Iran from the 11th to the 17th century. During his career he entered upon several interrelated activities: freelance architect, founder and editor of an architectural magazine, artist and designer.
Professional career
His professional career started in 1986 in Italy. Until 1993 he collaborated with several well-known Italian and international companies such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop. As a design team member, he was involved in Kansai Airport (Osaka) and Lingotto rehabilitation projects (Turin). During his stay in Italy he worked out several industrial and urban design projects.
In 1993, he established his own office in Tehran. Since that time he performed several projects for international organizations and companies: Italian Embassy, Italian School, Danish Embassy, Austrian Embassy, Netherlands Embassy, Japanese Embassy, Norwegian Embassy, Australian Embassy, Finland Embassy UNDP, World Bank, Nuovo Pignone, Shell, MAN Ferrostaal, Bayer, Festo, Ebara and Roche.
In 1995 and 2001-2002, Afshar Naderi has collaborated with Bahram Shirdel's office in Ekbatan Cultural Center and the Iranian Embassy in Brasilia projects.
Since 2009 Afshar Naderi has collaborated with the Italian engineering company Intertecno and becoming its branch manager in 2014 (in 2017 Intertecno was owned by Artelia Group). , on several important renovation projects like Azadi 5 star hotel (55,000 square metres) and Bonyad headquarter offices (30,000 square metres) in Tehran, Elahiyeh office tower (20,000 m2), Bukharest office tower (30,000 m2) in Tehran. . His work has been reviewed by the international web magazine Designboom and several local magazines and television.
Design
Kamran Afshar Naderi, has designed several unique pieces of furniture for his architecture and interior design projects. In 2021 he realized a set of zoomorphic furniture (Guardians) for a collective exhibition at Niavaran Cultural Center in Tehran. In 2022 his table and chairs won silver decoration of A’ Design Awards. The objects designed by K. A. Naderi can be defined as functional sculptures designated to exclusive clients. "Guardians" has been reviewed by Domus magazine March 2022.
Art Works
As an artist, he is interested in large scale artworks, executed by using different materials and media. For execution of his projects, he collaborates with technicians, and artisans of different fields. His Tree of Life (2017), performed in collaboration with the ceramist artist and calligrapher Leila Farzaneh, (together with a team of artisans, architects, engineers and technicians), is a contemporary interpretation of the myth of "Tree of Life". The work, large 3.50 m large and 9.50 m high, is installed at the IFCM institute in Lyon. Kamran Afshar Naderi's other sculptures are installed in the lobbies of residential towers, private villas or apartments. Academic career
Since 1993, Afshar Naderi has taught at Islamic Azad and Soureh Universities of Tehran (non-continuously). Afshar Naderi has published more than 200 articles and 3 books about Iranian and contemporary architecture. His essays and interviews are published in Iran, Italy, England, Switzerland, Kuwait, Turkey, Cyprus and Germany. His papers about the "design process" are used as university textbook in Faculty of Architecture of Azad University. . In 1998, Memar Magazine was founded by Afshar Naderi, Seyed Reza Hashemi and Soheila Beski. He is one the co-founders of Memar Awards for architecture (founded in 2001)
During the pandemic, he has published more than 30 episodes about Creativity on his Instagram page
Competition juries
Afshar Naderi has been regularly jury member of Memar award which is a well known architectural award. This award, founded by Memar magazine. Afshar Naderi has been a jury member of Memar award as well as several other competitions and awards in Iran, Malaysia, China and India.
