His Honour Judge John Geoffrey Ramon Owen Jones, QC (14 September 1928 – 14 June 2014) was a British judge.[1]

Early life and education

Jones was born in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, on 14 September 1928 to Wyndham C. Jones, the director of an electrical firm, and Lilias R. C. Jones (née Johns). He was a nephew of the actor Mervyn Johns, and thus a cousin of actress Glynis Johns, Mervyn Johns' daughter.[2][unreliable source]

Educated first at St Michael's School, Llanelli, he later read law at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and University College London.[3] Jones earned his Batchelor of Laws in 1955 and his Master of Laws in 1985.

Career

Jones was called to the Bar at Grey's Inn in 1956, and continued to practice law in Leicester from 1958 to 1970 and in London from 1970. On 14 January 1975, he became a circuit judge, assigned to the Midland and Oxford circuit[4] and sitting at the Central Criminal Court "Old Bailey".[5]

From 1985 to 2000, he served as president of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for England and Wales, and from 1996 to 1999, he was chairman of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales. In Herschel Prins' Psychopaths: An Introduction,[6] Jones is quoted as saying:

"My own present, unresolved thoughts are that 'evil' is within the realm of theologians and moral philosophers. Doctors, judges and lawyers would do well to concern themselves with bad deeds and bad health, that is deeds, which society has determined as criminal. If the perpetrators of bad deeds are not sick, they should be punished according to law. If they are sick, they should be treated."

In 1989, he was named an Honorary Senior Academic Fellow at Leicester Polytechnic. He was awarded an Honorary Legum Doctor at De Montfort University approaching his retirement in 1996.

Personal life

In 1954, Jones married Sheila Gregory in Kensington, London. He died on 14 September 2014 in Leicester.[7][unreliable source?]
