Jacquelyn Mills is a Canadian documentary filmmaker. She is best known for her films In the Waves and Geographies of Solitude.

Early life

Mills was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia.[1]

Career

In 2008, Mills' short film, For Wendy, won best sound design at the Atlantic Film Festival.[2]

Mills' first feature-length documenatry In the Waves, which was about her grandmother, premiered at Visions du Réel in 2017.[3] The film marked a shift in Mills' work awat from fiction and towards documentary.[4] In the Waves won the award for Best Documentary at the 2017 Atlantic Film Festival[5] and was selected as best medium-length documentary at RIDM (Montreal International Documentary Festival).[3] The film was also a shortlisted nominee for the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award for Best Canadian Documentary at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards 2017.

Geographies of Solitude, Mills second feature-length film, premiered in 2022 and centred on environmentalist Zoe Lucas and her life on Sable Island.[6] The film won the award for Best Canadian Feature Documentary at the 2022 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.[7] Mills was also awarded the Earl A. Glick emerging Canadian filmmaker award.[6]

In addition to her own films, Mills has also worked as a cinematographer and editor on films by her brother Brad Mills, most notably The Legend of the Psychotic Forest Ranger.[8]

Personal life

Mills currently lives in Montreal.[9]
