Gurmail Singh (also spelled Gurmel Singh) is an Indian politician, environmentalist and activist.[1] He is the Sarpanch of Ghrachon village of Sangrur district and the district chief of Aam Aadmi Party in Sangrur. He is an eminent environmentalist and is running a plantation drive since 2008. He is known for his efforts against the transfer of 23-acre land of village to private ownership. He had moved The High Court against the decision of the state government of Punjab.[2] He was the AAP party candidate for the seat of Member of Parliament from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2022 Lok Sabha Bye-Polls.

Education

He is an M.Sc. in Maths from Ranbir College, Sangrur. He had done his MBA from Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology at Sangrur. He is a farmer and owns eight acres of land in Sangrur.[2]

Early career

He is an eminent environmentalist and is running a plantation drive since 2008.[3] He worked as a teacher and taught children in different schools until 2018, when he joined politics full time.[4]

Politics

He joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2013 as a founder member.[2] He became the circle chief of the Bhawanigarh block in 2015.[4] In 2021, became the district chief of Aam Aadmi Party in Sangrur.[3]

Sarpanch

In 2018, he was elected as the Sarpanch of Ghrachon village of Sangrur district.[2]

He is known for his efforts against the transfer of 23-acre land of village by the panchayat department to the health department. In November 2020 the state government wanted to give the land to private person for building a private college. Sangrur MLA, Vijay Inder Singla was the Cabinet minister in 2018. Gurmail passed a resolution in gram sabha and then moved the High Court against the decision of the state government of Punjab.[2] Singh was suspended three times after he refused the Panchayat land to be taken by the private persons. AAP members had staged protests outside Singla's house several times over this issue of land transfer and the harassment of Singh.[5] Around the end of 2021, the land was transferred back to the panchayat.[2]

Lok Sabha by-election

Sitting MP from Sangrur, Bhagwant Mann had contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and won. AAP won a large majority of 92 out of total 117 seats including all the assembly seats from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency.[3] Mann was designated as the CM hence he resigned from his post of MP Sangrur on 14 March 2022.[6][7] By-election were called to fill the vacancy.

In June 2022, Singh was nominated as the candidate of Aam Aadmi Party for the seat of Member of Parliament from Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2022 Lok Sabha by-Poll.[2] He lost the by-election to Simranjit Singh Mann with a narrow margin of 6,245 (0.88%) votes.[8]
