Dharam Kanta (transl. Balance of Piety) is a 1982 Hindi-language action film, produced and directed by Sultan Ahmed under the Sultan Productions banner. It stars Raaj Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Reena Roy, Sulakshana Pandit, Amjad Khan in the pivotal roles and music composed by Naushad. The movie was a hit on its release and completed silver jubilee

Plot

Thakur Bhavani Singh is a daredevil dacoit whose presence is a terror in that region. He lives with his wife Radha, two sons Ram & Lakshman, and a daughter Ganga. Radha always insists to quit his profession but he puts a deaf ear. Once, Bhavani Singh abducts a boy Raju son of Zamindar Harnam Singh, and mortgages him for a hefty ransom. During the transposition, Raju dies when his mother curses Bhavani Singh. As a result, his family is spilt into a disaster when which makes him repent. Hence, he decides to surrender when his acolyte Chandan Singh takes up arms and dies in the encounter. The court penalizes life to Bhavani Singh, his sons Ram & Lakshman are fostered by two petty thieves Shankar & Shiv, and ironically, Ganga is adopted by the Harnam couple.

Years roll by, Shankar & Shiv become notorious and destiny makes them stand as rivals. On-going, they find their love interests Bijli & Chanda respectively. Besides, Jwala Singh son of Chandan Singh is a hazardous dacoit at one-time, he keeps an evil eye on Ganga. At that time, Shiv protects and treats her as his sister. Once in a robbery, Shankar & Shiv are apprehended. In the prison, they are acquainted with Bhavani Singh as unbeknownst and he tries to reform them. Meanwhile, Jwala Singh is intentionally tied up in the jail, seeks to kill Bhavani Singh, and flees. Shiv & Shankar save their father by giving them blood.

After some time, Bhavani Singh is released when the government rewards him with 5 acres of land in a village and he settles therein with Radha. However, Jwala Singh obstructs him at every level but he stands strong. In tandem, Shiv & Shankar befriend and abscond. On the way, they spot Jwala Singh forcibly abducting Ganga and they hinder them but wounded. During that plight, Bhavani Singh rescues Ganga and hands her over to her parents when realizing his virtue Harnam Singh’s wife relives him from the curse. So, one by one the family recognizes each other when Jwala Singh kidnaps the entire woman. At last, Bhavani Singh flares up, and along with Shiv & Shankar cease Jwala Singh. Finally, the movie ends on a happy note with the reunion of the family.
