Cyril Benzaquen (born 2 October 1989) is a French Muay Thai fighter and kickboxer. He is the current ISKA World Light Heavyweight Oriental Rules champion.[3]
He is the former WMF World champion, FFSCDA Muay Thai champion and the 2013 IFMA World Championship bronze medalist.[4]
Personal life
Cyril works as a model, and has achieved a BAC + 5 at the University of Paris Dauphine.[5] He is of Moroccan-Jewish origin[6] and of "traditionalist" Jewish faith.[7]
After obtaining a scientific baccalauréat, he continued his studies at the IUT of Sceaux where he obtained a DUT in marketing. He then joined Paris-Dauphine University in a management license adapted to high-level athletes, then in a traditional management license, from which he graduated respectively in 2011 and 2013. He obtained a master's degree in marketing in 2014 and a master's degree in entrepreneurship in 2015. For his end-of-studies project, supported by the It Agency, he organized the Dauphine Boxing Tour.
Martial arts career
Amateur sports debut
Cyril Benzaquen started boxing at the age of 14 in the Châtillon club alongside Aurélien Duarte. He specializes in Thai boxing. Although he started boxing at 14, he will not be able to fight until he is 18, with his parents and his club opposed. Finally, at the age of 18, alongside Aurélien Duarte and Pascal Ducros, he began his career with the Junior championships which he won, thus becoming successively Regional Champion and then Junior French Champion. The same year, in 2009, he met Alexandre N'Gom Priso, who would become his trainer. After winning the French Amateur Thai Boxing Championships, Cyril participates in the WMF Amateur World Championships in Bangkok. He finished in second place in the Championship by winning the silver medal.
Professional sports career
In 2012, he made his first professional debut. He became French Champion in Kickboxing in 2012 and Thai Boxing in 2013. He participated in several international competitions and became European Champion in 2013 then WMF World Champion in Thai Boxing in 2014 in Pattaya.[8] On 27 November 2015, he became World Champion ISKA in Kickboxing (K-1).[9][10] On 12 March he will box for the first time at the Glory World Series at the AccorHotels Arena.[citation needed]
On 28 May 2016, Cyril successfully defended his title of ISKA World Champion[11] He made three additional title defenses against Mbamba Cauwenbergh,[12] Daniel Frigola,[13] and Sofokleous Ioannis.[14]
Benzaquen made his sixth ISKA title defense in a match against Florin Lambagiu on May 31, 2022, at Grand Palais Éphémère in Paris, France. He won the fight via unanimous decision, which was found very controversial by several media outlets.[15][16][17] The International Sport Karate Association commission eventually denied Lambagiu’s appeal, but ordered a rematch within twelve months.[citation needed]
