The Church of God and Saints of Christ is a Christian church established in Lawrence, Kansas, by William Saunders Crowdy in 1896. William Crowdy began congregations in several cities in the Midwestern and Eastern United States. It claims adherence mainly to Orthodox Christianity, especially to the Orthodox Catholic Church.
According to the web page for this branch of the Church, "We are the Church of God and Saints of Christ, indoctrinated in accordance with I Corinthians 1:1-2 and Ephesians 2:19-20 … Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the Saints and the household of God. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets; Jesus Christ himself being the Chief cornerstone.”
Even though this Christian orthodox branch of the Church is distinctly differentiated from the original and true "Hebrew Israelite religious group", the names of these two distinct organizations are identical and have remained unchanged. Thus, the unfortunate and continuing confusion found in media and scholarly references.
There was a significant and historical division in the Church leadership which arose along the lines of adherence and practice of Christian orthodoxy.
The Christian orthodox branch of the original Church denomination is led today by Bishop Robert Dennis Grant, Sr.
