Golf is a competitive and leisure sport that requires various clubs to hit and target small balls into a series of holes located on a course.[1]

The origin of golf has been difficult to determine but recent evidence has shown it started in the Netherlands but developed in Scotland. The courses were originally fields of short grass formed by sheep in their grazing patterns. Players would use a stick and a feathered stuffed leather ball to play. Since then, clubs and balls have been manufactured to maximize the distance and accuracy of the ball path.

The intention of the game is hit a ball with as few strokes as possible and aim it at the hole assigned. A golf course comprises a maximum of 18 holes. Some courses contain only nine holes, which is usually used for recreational purposes. A nine hole course can be played twice to create a full round. In order for a hole to be played, it must contain a teeing ground to start from and a putting green where the flagstick and cup (hole) is located. You start at the tee ground labeled "Hole One" and continue through the course till you reach the 18th hole. Each hole is played once to complete the round. Depending on the distance from the teeing ground to the putting green, it can take multiple strokes to hole the ball. More experienced players will be able to complete a hole with fewer strokes. It can take up to four hours to complete an entire course depending on how many players are participating.

Each club played is designed to give the maximum potential needed to hit the ball as close to the hole by also taking in the consideration of distance. A player is limited to 14 clubs which are known by the traditional names of "a driver", "irons", and "woods". Each of the successive nine or 18 holes are differently laid out on the course to provide a player diversity when choosing a club. A course will contain a variety of terrain such as the fairway, bunkers, and water which adds to the difficulty of the hole being played.

A par, which is a score standard it would take for a professional to hole the ball, is associated with each hole. A par ranges from par three to par five depending on the distance and difficulty to reach the ball from the teeing ground to the hole. The game objective is to use the fewest strokes as possible to land the ball into the hole and striving to use fewer strokes the standard par.Template:WPSS-cat
