On 3 November 2022, Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party, was shot in the shin in an assassination attempt during a long march against the government.[3][4] Khan and his supporters were in Wazirabad when a gunman opened fire, injuring Khan and a number of other PTI leaders.[5][6]

Background

Ouster of Imran Khan

A political crisis began in Pakistan in 2022 when the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement tabled a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan. The crisis involved a constitutional crisis when President Arif Alvi dissolved parliament on Khan's recommendation.[7] The Supreme Court reinstated the parliament[8][9] and Khan lost the no-confidence motion, being succeeded by current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.[10][11]

Khan has blamed his ouster on an "American conspiracy," calling the current administration an "imported government."[12]

2022 Azadi March-II

The 2022 Azadi March-II is a march on Islamabad from Lahore which commenced on 28 October 2022, conducted by Khan and his supporters to protest the government's refusal to hold early elections.[13]

Shooting

On 3 November, while giving a speech to his supporters, shots were fired by unidentified gunmen at Khan's container-mounted-truck. According to an aide of Khan, the truck was fired at six times.[14] A Khan supporter by the name of Ibtisam[15] tried to tackle the gunman.[16] One other supporter was shot-dead attempting to tackle the shooter.[17] A burst of gunfire happened first, then, moments later, a single pistol fire sound.

Khan was shot in the shin and transferred to a hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His doctor, Faisal Sultan, said that X-rays and scans showed bullet fragments lodged in Khan's legs, and that his right shin bone was chipped.[18] A leader of the PTI said that his condition was stable.[19]

In total, nine people have been injured, including Imran Khan and Senator Faisal Javed Khan, and one has been killed.[20][21]

Assailant

The Pakistani police have arrested the gunman who shot Imran Khan, identified as Muhammad Naveed. In a video, Naveed[22] said that he shot Imran Khan as he was "spreading hatred misleading the people."[23]He added than the Azaan had been playing and was upset that the loud March occurred at the same time.

But confirmed that the shooting was an assassination attempt, saying that he wanted to kill him. He said that he only wanted to kill Imran Khan and no one else, and that he was acting on his own.[24][25] The video has been dismissed by Khan's allies as a "cover-up".[26]

Khan's statement

PTI members Asad Umar and Mian Aslam released a statement, saying that Imran Khan asked them to issue it on his behalf. In the statement, Khan said that he "believes there are 3 people on whose behest this was done – Shehbaz Sharif, Rana Sanaullah and Major General Faisal. He said he was receiving information and is saying this on that basis."[27]

Reactions

Domestic

He also said that the federal government would provide all necessary support to the provincial government in Punjab in security and investigation.[28][29]
