Asociación Deportiva Aserrí Fútbol Club is a Costa Rican football club from the canton of Aserrí, San José Province. It was founded in 1940 and currently play in the Segunda División de Costa Rica.[1]

History

It all started back in 1940, when a great national politician named Ernesto Maten Carranza created a soccer team with the name of Ernesto Maten Carranza; which had the initials (E.M.C) on his shirt: The idea was to participate in local and neighborhood tournaments, the latter taking place in the Desamparados canton, specifically in front of the church in what is now the Desamparados park.

The (EMC) had, among other players, the participation of Elías Jiménez, Jorge Gómez, Miguel Ramos, Francisco Chinchilla, Luis Fallas, Efraín Rojas who was the general captain, Guillermo Abarca, Juan Rafael Solano known as Yico, Chico Calvo and Olman Vargas among others. One of the most relevant players and with an exquisite technique was Yico", who used to play without shoes, as they say barefoot.

As of 1943 Don Ernesto lost the interest he had in the team, so he decided to stop financing it and this situation caused its disappearance. A few months later, news circulated by soccer leaders at the national level informing that the canton of Aserrí was invited to participate in the first cantonal championship, which would take place in the National Stadium. Given the interest created by this news, a group of enthusiastic people met in the municipality of Aserrí to form a directive and thus create the team that would represent the canton for said tournament. The name chosen for the Aserriceño representative was (C.A.C.A.) (Club Atlético Central Aserriceño) and his uniform would be green and white, with his shirt striped. The base of this aserriceño group was the recently disappeared EMC.

He (C.A.C.A.) participated in said championship and as a reward received some dividends that totaled ¢150 colones, but apparently the directors were not satisfied and did not continue with the team; causing the disappearance of the (C.A.C.A.). However, the players did not sit idly by and soon they began to comment in the pulperías (which by the way were meeting centers in those days), that the team could not stay like this; something had to be done. It was then that Mr. Efraín Rojas took the lead and said: friends, let's meet in the priest's house to see what can be done.

This meeting was held in 1945, with the presence of the following gentlemen: Elías Jiménez, Juan Rafael Solano "Yico", Francisco Chico Calvo, Marcelino Cascante "Mamino", Carlos Castro and Rafael Porras Chinchilla. This is how, from that day, the Aserrí F.C. The first board of directors was made up as follows: Captain General Mr. Efraín Rojas, Secretary Rafael Porras Chinchilla and Treasurer Carlos Castro. However, there was still a small problem: there was no uniform, as well as balls and much less money. It was then that they remembered the ¢150 colones that they had obtained as a profit for participating in the cantonal championship, which at that time was in the hands of the directors of the (C.A.C.A). All the respective paperwork was done to obtain said money and in the end, the reward was good, the ¢150 colones were in the hands of Aserrí F.C.

The investment of that money could not have been better: they quoted a uniform at the Paco Navarrete tailor shop on Second Avenue, the colors of the shirts were red with a diagonal white stripe. In total, 12 field shirts and 1 goalkeeper shirt were purchased; The final cost of the investment was ¢120 colones, the remaining ¢30 colones were invested in two soccer balls, each with a value of ¢15 colones, which were bought in one of the sports stores with the most history in sports. National: The Sport Center.

The first game was dedicated to the Manuel Hidalgo Mora School and its final result was 4 to 2. Years passed and in 1962 the national championship of cantons was officially created, which was called "National League". The participation of Aserrí F.C and within said tournament were good but promotion to the Second Division of national football was never achieved. In 1965 it is said that it was the best team of all time, with players like: Víctor Mora, Pompilio Marín, Manuel Alvarado "Chele", the great defender Gilberto Castro Castro "Pelota", Miguel Garbanzo, Marcelino Cascante "Mamino" who was the coach, Adolfo Calderón, Francisco Fallas, Gilberto Retana, Edilberto López, Roger López, Fabio Piedra, Roger Leiva, Emilio Marín, Rodrigo "Saprissa", Adrián Obando and Roberto Marín. Something important to note is that at that time football was lived a lot, the players sweated the shirt as they say popularly and the rivalry between local teams and bars always existed.

As an anecdote, it can be said that one of the most dangerous bars was that of Florence, a team from Poás de Aserrí of very good quality, but of which it is said that if the visiting team came out victorious, there was sure to be a lawsuit, it is even said that the players had to go change their clothes to the Llano, which is today the Tres Marías.

In recent history, "Pelota" was remembered as the emergent defender and goalkeeper Gilberto Castro Castro was known. A week after his death (April 26, 2009) the team at that time paid him a posthumous tribute on the Aserrí field. That afternoon, instead of a minute of silence, the players of both teams, the coaching staff, family members and the public present made a minute of applause in memory of "Pelota".

In 2000 Aserri achieved promotion to the First Amateur League of ANAFA together with Puerto Viejo, La Garita de Santa Cruz, Cabuya de Nicoya, Nances de Puntarenas, Esparza, El Bosque de Guacimo, Atlético J.R de Rio Azul and Ajax de Pavas. And lagging behind are the Universidad Latina de Heredia and Ventanas de Pacífico in Golfito. For the 2006-2007 season they achieved the national title of the ANAFA First Division and the LIASCE rose.

In 2018, the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense of the First Division signs an agreement with Aserrí F. C. to take over its franchise for a period of three years and serve in the Second Division with the minor leagues of said team under the name of C.S. April 11 from the Opening Tournament 2018. The technical direction of April 11 will be in charge of Cristian Oviedo, after obtaining the title of the previous tournament with the High Performance.

Stadium

This property was previously an open field for amateur soccer. In 2007, and thanks to the investment of Mr. Minor Vargas (Costa Rican businessman) and his Icon Group, an agreement was reached with the Municipality of the canton to turn it into a quality stadium, despite its small size.

The ST Center has a synthetic grass, bleachers for 2,500 people (although it can be increased depending on the event) and also has artificial lighting.

It has been the headquarters of Costa Rican First and Second Division clubs, such as Brujas Fútbol Club (team now defunct), Asociación Deportiva Barrio México and Aserrí Fútbol Club.

Currently, the stadium is managed by the sons of Minor Vargas, thanks to the contracts still in force with the Santa Teresita de Aserrí Development Association.
