Anupamaa is an Indian Hindi-language television drama series that premiered on 13 July 2020 on Star Plus.[3] It streams digitally on Disney+ Hotstar. Produced by Rajan Shahi and Deepa Shahi under Director's Kut Productions, it stars Rupali Ganguly, Gaurav Khanna and Sudhanshu Pandey.[4] It is based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Sreemoyee.[5]

The story revolves around a Gujarati homemaker Anupamaa Shah. She's having a family-oriented and self-sacrificing nature. Anupamaa's husband Vanraj is having a secret extra-marital affair with his colleague Kavya Gandhi for the past eight years in the disguise of friendship. Her daughter Pakhi and elder son Paritosh even replace her with Kavya for Pakhi's school competition and meeting with Paritosh's girlfriend Kinjal Dave's parents. But Kinjal's mother Rakhi starts sensing the relationship between Vanraj and Kavya. Samar also meets Kavya's USA-returned niece Nandini Iyer and they instantly turn into friends for their love for Anupamaa. Soon Anupamaa's best friend Devika Mehta learns of the affair and informs Anupamaa about it along with Kavya's husband Aniruddh but she refuses to believe them and expresses her faith in Vanraj and Kavya. As Paritosh and Kinjal become engaged, the family prepares for Anupamaa and Vanraj's silver jubilee anniversary and Nandini learns of the affair and informs Paritosh about it. But he is manipulated by Vanraj. On the wedding anniversary day, Anupamaa feels heartbroken when she sees Vanraj and Kavya become intimate. She decides to live her life on her own terms and Samar also breaks all ties with Vanraj after learning about it and starts calling him "Mr. Shah" instead of "Papa".

More people become aware of the affair, Samar falls for Nandini to which she initially declines and they decide to continue as friends. Rakhi exposes the affair in front of the whole family leaving them heartbroken. Vanraj also leaves home after Hasmukh refuses to support him and his family suffers a financial crisis leading Anupamaa to start working as a cooking and dance teacher. Paritosh and Kinjal elope and marry and Vanraj meets with an accident and starts realizing his feelings for Anupamaa. Samar also learns about Nandini's past accident which left her sterile due to the removal of her uterus and her hidden feelings for him. As Vanraj tries to confess his love, Anupamaa rebukes him and he returns to Kavya and loses his job. Thus Anupamaa decides to divorce Vanraj to set herself free from a caged relationship. Pakhi suffers from depression after seeing Kavya's real nature and Anupamaa and Vanraj decide to live together until Pakhi recovers.

While Nandini confesses her love for Samar, Kavya is molested and brought back to Shah's house. Samar also vows to start "Anupamaa Dance Academy " to fulfill his, Anupamaa, and Nandini's dream. As the divorce date approaches, Vanraj fears that he will lose his family and Anupamaa leaving behind a letter. Later Anupamaa gets a call from Dr. Advait Khanna that Vanraj is in Blissdom's Wellness Resort of Surat. There, Anupamaa is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Samar and Nandini's engagement is canceled after the truth about Nandini's sterility is revealed and Anupamaa supports them. Anupamaa urges Vanraj to divorce her to set herself free, Kavya also divorces Aniruddh. She starts preparing for her wedding with Vanraj and threatens to imprison the whole family under fake allegations as Vanraj flees from the marriage. After his arrival, Anupamaa confronts him for lacking courage and commitment and he marries Kavya. Soon Anupamaa undergoes emergency surgery and post her recovery, everyone returns to Ahmedabad. Hasmukh asks Anupamaa to return as she will become an integral part of the family forever to which she agrees. As Kavya and Anupamaa live under the same roof, problems arise and she tries to turn family members against her but fails miserably.

Samar and Nandini establish "Anupamaa Dance Academy" with Anupamaa's ideas and family rejoices. But Vanraj and Kavya lose their jobs again and Anupamaa advises them to open a café in her dance academy and name it "Leela Ka Café". Kavya tries to turn Pakhi against Anupamaa but fails and then turns Vanraj against Anupamaa and it works as Vanraj instead of feeling grateful taunts Anupamaa for her help. Anuj Kapadia, an NRI business tycoon from the USA relocates to India and turns out to be Anupamaa and Devika's batchmate and friend. It is revealed that Anuj loved Anupamaa for twenty-six years and remained unmarried. He instantly becomes friends with Samar and other members of Shah's family after he saves the latter from an accident. He gives Anupamaa a business partnership for his future project to which she agrees with the support of her well-wishers from the family. Seeing Anupamaa and Anuj's growing friendship, Vanraj seethes in jealousy. Meanwhile, Rohan, Nandini's former boyfriend, and obsessive lover also reenters her life to win her back and tortures Samar and Nandini for it, and even attempts to murder Samar and Anupamaa. But he is discovered by Anuj and leaves their lives fearing imprisonment for his father's scams.

As time passes, Vanraj, Leela, Paritosh, and Kavya slander Anupamaa for her growing friendship with Anuj. Tired of all taunts and accusations she leaves the house and Samar also follows her. They start living in a rented house. Kavya deceitfully makes Anupamaa, Dolly and Vanraj sign the property papers in her name. Anuj confesses his unrequited love for Anupamaa after becoming irritated by some family members' slandering her, unaware of the fact that Anupamaa overheard his confession. Initially shattered, Samar and Gopichandra convince them to continue their relationship as friends. But Leela crosses her limits by brutally humiliating Hasmukh in front of the whole family and he leaves the house. While trying to bring him back, Vanraj asks Kavya to leave Shah's house with him and in a fit of rage, she reveals about tricking everyone by signing property papers in her name. This makes Vanraj vengeful and on the day of Hasmukh and Leela's golden jubilee anniversary celebration, he handovers divorce papers to her shocking everyone but she refuses to divorce him and returns back property to Hasmukh's name. Later Anuj meets with an accident while fighting some goons and Anupamaa starts realizing her feelings for him. While Samar proposes to Nandini for marriage, Vanraj signs a business partnership "Vanika Teamworks" with a girl named Malvika. But she turns out to be Anuj's younger sister and it is revealed that Anuj is an adopted child of Kapadias which makes Vanraj plot to steal his whole Kapadia Empire through Malvika. As time passes, it is revealed that Anuj's parents died in a road accident due to his mistake and in his attempt to save Malvika from her gold-digger boyfriend Akshay, he had her married but the man beat her, causing her depression. Kavya leaves which leads to a major argument between Samar and Nandini fuelled by Vanraj which even leads Nandini to question Samar's character and his love and loyalty towards her thus making him furious for not trusting his love. But they clear their misunderstandings after she returns and Anupamaa appoints her in Anuj's company to monitor Vanraj so that he doesn't use Malvika for his own selfish needs. Vanraj manipulates Malvika against Anuj leading Anuj to transfer the whole Kapadia Empire under her name and he decides to start a new chapter with Anupamaa by working over her dance academy.

On the night of Valentine's Day while Anupamaa proposes to Anuj, Nandini leaves Samar due to her insecurities regarding marriage and returns back to the USA. This leaves him heartbroken and he vows to never believe in love again and decides to focus on his dance career and dance academy for his mother. Later Shahs prepare to celebrate Anupamaa's forty-fifth birthday and Kinjal reveals her pregnancy making everyone happy. But Paritosh refuses to be responsible for the baby and calls him a bad omen ultimately facing the wrath of the whole family and Samar takes the fatherly responsibilities of the child. Soon Anupamaa announces her decision to marry Anuj much to Vanraj, Leela, Kavya, Paritosh, Pakhi, and Rakhi's dismay. As the marriage rituals start, Malvika fires Vanraj, Kavya, and Paritosh for unprofessionalism and Samar convinces Pakhi and Paritosh to attend Anupamaa's wedding wholeheartedly and Kavya also joins team Anupamaa. As the wedding approaches Hasmukh is diagnosed with heart disease and decides to delay the surgery till marriage and it is publicly revealed. He promises to take care of himself and Vanraj's ego is hurt by Samar, Pakhi, and Paritosh's growing affection for Anuj. Anuj promises to remain a father figure and friend to them only till the time Vanraj won't come between Anupamaa and her children. As Shahs and Kapadias meet at the new Kapadia Mansion for the housewarming party, differences arise due to their class dissimilarity between Vanraj, Barkha, and Ankush's egos while Samar-Sara and Pakhi-Adhik start becoming friends with each other. At Kinjal's baby shower, it is revealed that Pakhi and Adhik are having an affair and Vanraj tries to control Pakhi which makes her rebellious. Meanwhile, Sara determines to expose Adhik to being a playboy and his past affairs in the USA in front of Anupamaa. Soon Anuj comes to know about Ankush and Barkha's bankruptcy and their ploy to get the Kapadia Empire and gets qualified to foster Anu with Anupamaa. Samar, Pakhi initially feels jealous but eventually accepts her as their sister while Paritosh and Kinjal get worried about their unborn child. Later problems start increasing as Pakhi and Adhik keep meeting secretly by bunking college and Barkha turns Pakhi rebellious against her parents by offering her a luxurious lifestyle. Anupamaa vows to never return to Shah's house after Pakhi crosses all her limits to badly humiliate her while Sara moves back to the USA for her further studies. Soon Anupamaa and Anuj arrange a Mahamrityunjaya Paath for both families amidst which he and Vanraj meet with a deadly accident over a cliff and Vanraj is assumed to be responsible for it. Anuj falls into a coma and Kapadias start misbehaving with Anupamaa and slandering her for her soft nature towards Shahs and cleverly takes control over Kapadia Empire. However, Anuj comes back to consciousness and clarifies that the cliff accident was just an accident only and Vanraj tried to save him but they both fell off the cliff and banish Kapadias from Kapadia's business. Samar also reconciles with Vanraj after learning the truth and starts calling him "Papa" again. While Kapadia plots through hook and crook to regain Anuj's trust Kinjal delivers a baby girl. Later Rakhi catches Paritosh having an extramarital affair with a girl. Soon Shahs organize a naming ceremony for Kinjal's baby and names her "Aarya" while Anupamaa learns about Paritosh's extra-marital affair. Paritosh blackmails Anupamaa not to reveal his affair but she refuses to bend down recalling her own trauma and revealing it in front of the whole family post which Vanraj ousts Paritosh from Shah's house while Kinjal suffers depression and moves to Kapadia Mansion with Aarya. Later Vanraj brings back Paritosh to Shah's house in an intoxicated state after meeting Kinjal. Kinjal also returns to Shah's house as she did not want to become a burden on Anupamaa and Anuj and decides to divorce Paritosh on the grounds of adultery and cheating. Later, Paritosh calls the Foster Care Officers to take back Anu and accuses Anupamaa and Anuj of not fulfilling their duties. However, seeing the parental love of care for Anupamaa and Anuj for Anu and vice-versa they leave while Anuj slaps Paritosh after coming to know about his deeds.

Seven days later, Shahs and Kapadias celebrate Kanya Puja at their respective homes while Samar decides to never get married owing to his trauma of failed relationship with Nandini and two divorces in the family and expresses his fear of ending up like Vanraj and Paritosh. Later both families come together to celebrate the Garba event while Paritosh turns a psychopath for Kinjal and Aarya and decides to take revenge upon Anupamaa. Later Kinjal decides to give a second chance to Paritosh for Aarya's sake and he goes to a rehabilitation center to control his anger issues. Soon women and men plan their separate dayout while Pakhi too goes on a secret trip with Adhik and coincidentally stays in the same resort where the women are staying and bumps into Anupamaa. While Leela and Vanraj become more strict on her making Pakhi more rebellious about her decision to marry Adhik, the latter reveals his true intentions to Anuj as he genuinely started loving Pakhi after seeing her love which made him reform himself. Later, Anuj gets Anupamaa enrolled in a three-months financial literacy diploma course while Pakhi and Adhik elopes and marries leading to the former getting disowned by Vanraj.

Production

Development

In February 2020, Rajan Shahi, the producer of Aai Kuthe Kay Karte, announced his plan to produce its Hindi remake, Anupamaa, stating, "This interesting concept around a mother's journey has been so inspirational that Star wants to bring it in Hindi too".[6]

In early August 2020, the cast of the series recorded a special song for the Raksha Bandhan sequence titled "Aaj Rakhi Nau Tyohaar Chhe" (transl. Today is Raksha Bandhan's festival) in a Gujarati, Hindi and English fusion.[7]

Casting

Rupali Ganguly was cast as the protagonist Anupamaa, returning to television after seven years.[8] Sudhanshu Pandey was cast as Anupamaa's husband, Vanraj Shah.[9] Paras Kalnawat, Muskaan Bamne, Aashish Mehrotra, Alpana Buch and Arvind Vaidya were cast as Samar Shah, Pakhi Shah, Paritosh Shah, Leela Shah and Hasmukh Shah respectively.[10][11][12][13][14][15] Madhavi Gogate, Ekta Saraiya, Paresh Bhatt, Stuti Zakarde, Mehul Nisar and Bhakti Chauhan were cast to play Kanta Joshi, Dolly Shah Dhamecha, Sanjay Dhamecha, Meenali Dhamecha, Bhavesh Joshi and Jhilmil respectively.[16][17][18] However, days before the filming resumed after the COVID-19 outbreak in late June, Additi Gupta was confirmed to be infected with the virus.[19][20] She was replaced by Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty and the sequences earlier shot by Gupta were reshot by Chakraborty.[21] Days after premiering in July 2020, Shekhar Shukla, Nidhi Shah and Farrukh Saeed were signed to play Jignesh, Kinjal Dave and Pramod Dave respectively.[22][23][24] Tasneem Sheikh, Anagha Bhosale were and Rushad Rana were cast as Rakhi Dave, Nandini Iyer and Aniruddh Gandhi.[25][26][27]

In April 2021, Apurva Agnihotri[28] joined the cast as Dr. Advait Khanna for a cameo and completed his role in June 2021.[29]

In late August 2021 Gaurav Khanna was cast as Anuj Kapadia.[30] Khanna said that he found his character very "stylish and suave, yet rooted in motherland".[31] In September 2021, Deepak Gheewala was cast to play Gopichandra Karodia.[32] Also that month, Varun Sharma was cast as Rohan to play a cameo and he finished off his role in October 2021. Next, Savita Prabhune replaced Madhavi Gogate as Kanta Joshi in late October 2021.[33] In December 2021, actress Aneri Vajani joined the cast to play Malvika Kapadia.[34]

In March 2022, Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini announced her decision to take a break from acting, however, she announced that she never quitted the show and can come back in future,[35] but later confirmed her decision to quit acting forever thus making an end to Nandini's character and already shot her last scene in February 2022.[36][37] Later that month, Aneri Vajani playing Malvika also announced that her role was just a cameo and right now its shown on a long break due to viewers' disconnect with her role's negative development.[38]

In May 2022, singer Mika Singh made a special appearance as Anuj's friend in Anupamaa and Anuj's Mehendi and Sangeet ceremony and to promote his upcoming show Mika Di Vohti.[39] During that month, Aneri Vajani announced her decision to participate in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 and confirmed permanently quitting the series with "no scope of coming back as its all over for her role".[40][41]

Later that month, Rohit Bakshi[42] and Ashlesha Sawant[43] were cast to play Ankush Kapadia and Barkha Kapadia respectively while Alma Hussein[44] and Adhik Mehta[45][46] were cast to play Sara Kapadia and Adhik Kapadia opposite Kalnawat and Bamne respectively. In an interview after being cast as Adhik Kapadia, Mehta revealed that "he earlier auditioned for the role of Samar (which eventually locked to Kalnawat) in the casting phase of the series but it didn't happened at that time".[47] Child artist Asmi Deo was also cast as an orphan Anu but her track was put on hold and resumed in July 2022.[48]

In July 2022, Paras Kalnawat signed on to appear on the dance-based reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10 on rival network Colors TV. Anupamaa makers objected and terminated his contract overnight. Speaking on the same, Producer Rajan Shahi said, "We as a production house won’t entertain breach of contract. We have terminated his services as an actor with immediate effect. We wish him all the best for his future endeavors".[49] While Paras said, "Everything is great with Anupamaa but I did not see my character evolving. I have huge respect for Rajan sir and the team and wish them all the best. At this stage of my career, I wanted to take up a new challenge. Also, I must add that I did inform the production about my decision, however, due to the channel and contract clauses, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to continue with Anupamaa after signing Jhalak". He further said, "My character never evolved since past one year and after Anagha's exit I was just reduced to a family member standing in background with nothing to do" and he signed off calling whatever happened was a "nightmare" and "sigh of relief" as makers asked him to choose between the two.[49][50][51][52] Later after facing several controversies related to the series, makers replaced Kalnawat overnight by Sagar Parekh in the same month.[53]

In September 2022, Alma Hussein who was cast opposite Paras also quit the series quoting, "I entered the show in May and was very happy about working in this show. But soon I realised that my track was going nowhere. I also felt that I was not growing as an actor. Being so young, I want to learn as much as possible, which was not happening. Due to major twists and turns in the story in the past couple of months, and also because of Paras' exit from the show, the makers could not open the track of Sara and Samar. Instead of me just standing behind with not much to do I felt it was better to look for something worthwhile. So I spoke to Rajan Shahi sir and discussed with him. He also agreed with me. It was a mutual decisiona and it was decided that they would show Sara leaving for the US for higher studies. I am glad that he understood my point of view. So, yes, as of now I am not a part of the show."[54][55]

Filming

Set in Gujarat, the series is mainly shot at Film City in Mumbai.[56][57] Some initial sequences were shot in Ahmedabad during early March 2020.[58]

On 13 February 2021, the filming was halted for a day for sanitisation when Paras Kalnawat playing Samar, tested positive for COVID-19 virus.[59] The sequences of Kalnawat with Anagha Bhosale playing Nandini were cancelled including proposal sequence of their characters and were replanned until his recovery and return in late February 2021. However he shot some sequences from his home under his and his mother's quarantine period.[60][61]

On 2 April 2021, Rupali Ganguly, Sudhanshu Pandey and Aashish Mehrotra who portray Anupamaa, Vanraj and Paritosh respectively and producer Rajan Shahi tested positive for COVID-19. Certain sequences were postponed and the story focused more on the characters Rakhi, Kavya and Leela while Ganguly, Pandey and Mehrotra shot for few sequences from their homes.[62][63] A few days later, Tassnim Sheikh, Alpana Buch and Nidhi Shah also tested positive for COVID-19 and the story focussed more on Samar, Nandini and Pakhi's characters.[64]

On 13 April 2021, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew due to increased Covid cases in Maharashtra, while the production halted from 14 April 2021.[65] Hence, the production location was soon shifted temporarily to Silvassa alongside other shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya 2 and Aai Kuthe Kay Karte of the production house.[66] In June 2021, the Maharashtra government permitted shooting within the state with certain restrictions, following which the whole cast and crew returned to Mumbai on 8 June 2021 and resumed shooting the following day.[67]

Prequel series

Main article: Anupama: Namaste America

An eleven-episodic prequel web-series Anupama: Namaste America was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 25 April 2022.[68] The story is set after ten years of Anupamaa and Vanraj's marriage in the year 2005.[69][70]

Reception

Critics

The India Today stated, "Rupali Ganguly fits the character perfectly and aces the role of a Gujarati homemaker. The show strikes a chord with the homemakers as they can identify with the protagonist. Anupamaa has the right amount of emotions, drama, and spice. The show has the right mix of family values and a modern outlook. The show is a heartwarming tale".[71]

ThePrint appreciated the series along with few other Hindi GECs based on the story of a mother mentioning that it delivered moral lessons and calling the character Anupamaa as paragon of virtue and farcical.[72]

Television special

Ravivaar With Star Parivaar (2022)

Th cast of Anupamaa participated as a team in the musical game show Ravivaar With Star Parivaar.[73] It competed with the teams of other Star Plus's shows.[74] Anupamaa emerged as the 2nd runner-up of the show.[75]

Controversies

Cold-war and groupism among leads controversy

The series came under a controversy for the first time in June 2021 with the alleged "Cold-war between leads Rupali Ganguly and Sudhanshu Pandey" which stated about a cold-war and groupism between cast members led by Rupali Ganguly and Sudhanshu Pandey with Alpana Buch, Ashish Mehrotra and Muskaan Bamne being under Ganguly's team while Madalsa Sharma Chakraborty, Paras Kalnawat and Anagha Bhosale under Pandey's team. However all of them denied the same on several occasions with Pandey claiming it "difference of opinions" and Chakraborty calling it "plain rumours" and "rubbish".[76][77]

The rumour further escalated with "Ego clashes between leads Sudhanshu Pandey and Gaurav Khanna" however again they both denied the same with Pandey saying, "Show can't run with just one storyline".[78]

Paras Kalnawat's controversial exit

The series again faced a controversy in July 2022 when producer Rajan Shahi terminated actor Paras Kalnawat's three-years-long contract for signing up Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10 on rival channel Colors TV and termed him as "unprofessional".[49] To his defense Kalnawat claimed that "he already informed the makers about the same to which they asked him to choose between Anupamaa and Jhalak in return[51] and he chosed the latter for his career growth claiming his ouster to be a PR Tactic" supporting his former co-actor Anagha Bhosale's allegations of "set politics" on makers[79] and signed off calling whatever happened was a "nightmare" and "sigh of relief"[52] and revealed many dark secrets of the production house[80] including his return to show within five days of his father's demise as leads were tested COVID-19 positive.[50][81] The controversy heated up with Kalnawat being replaced overnight by Sagar Parekh[53] and ended up in September 2022 with Alma Hussein quitting the series who joined the cast in June 2022 opposite Kalnawat being unsatisfied with her character growth.[54][55]

Adaptations

Star Plus's Anupamaa is an official Hindi remake of Star Jalsha's Sreemoyee.[82] However its Marathi remake Aai Kuthe Kay Karte and Anupamaa both are produced by same producer Rajan Shahi under Director's Kut Productions and follows same plot.[83]
