Extremist Rhetoric

"What is the lure of extremist rhetoric in democratic controversy? After all, most citizens are not extremists. Part of the lure lies in the fact that it is easier to believe passionately in a value or cause without regard to subtlety, reasoned argument, probabilistic evidence, and vigorously tested scientific theory or fact. Expressions of single-minded visions for solving problems and changing society can make complexity and uncertainty, frustration and regret, all appear to evaporate. Another part of the lure is that having comrades-in-argument is comforting." ~Amy Gutman (excerpt from The Lure & Dangers of Extremist Rhetoric)

When a few words speak volumes

ARCA: As a separate issue, anything that relies on DS will fail. The only way forward is for arb com to directly regulate conduct by removing prejudiced editors and admins, either from an area or from WP, not trying to adopt rules about just how disruptive they can be. ~DGG

Mental Force and the Volitional Brain

In fact, the belief that our thoughts can influence our actions is so basic to our entire idea of ourselves and our place in nature, and is so essential to our actual functioning in this world, that any suggestion that this idea is false would become plausible only under extremely coercive conditions, such as its incompatibility with basic physics. But no such coercion exists. Contemporary physical theory does allow our experiences, per se, to be truly efficacious and non-reducible: our experiences are elements of the causal structure that do necessary things that nothing else in the theory can do. Thus science, if pursued with sufficient care, demands no cloistering of disciplines, or interpretation as user illusions of the apparent causal effects of our conscious thoughts upon our physical actions. ~ Henry P. Stapp, (May 1999), Physics Division, Berkeley National Laboratory, title="Attention, Intention, and Will in Quantum Physics", published in the Journal of Consciousness Studies, : 35 .

Useful quotes relative to JP:PAG

To say it in WikiVoice, or not?

While this list of sources is really good and does establish "commonly used by reliable sources" I think we should additionally ask ourselves - what added benefit is there to Wikipedia saying it "in our own voice" as against simply reporting in a neutral manner that it is common for his comments to be described as racist. As of this moment, we are engaging in what I think is admirable short-term restraint. We say in the lede "He has a history of making controversial [weasel words] comments." That's fine as far as it goes, because 'controversial comments' is true, and is neither positive nor negative as an evaluation. Sometimes controversial comments are good, sometimes they are bad. Fine. But we are at the same time here being too cautious, I think, in that we fail to inform the reader as to why the comments are controversial. Is he saying things that might be controversial in Iowa like "Gay marriage should be legal" or "Marijuana prohibition has done more harm than good"? No, actually. So I think we should cautiously say something like "He has a history of making comments that have commonly been referred to as racist.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]" Well, maybe 9 footnotes is excessive, but you see my point. We have more than enough to make the point that the reader needs to know, and I think the point is stronger than if we simply say, in our own voice, that he has a history of making racist comments.
~Jimbo Wales (talk) 9:57 am, 19 June 2018, Tuesday (19 days ago) (UTC−5)

  • And today Justapedia editors have the hindsight to know
To include it in a BLP, or not?

BLPs wherein a subject's work, beliefs or ideologies are perhaps more controversial than the actual subject, should not become focused on bolstering and subsequently refuting the subject's views or theories rather than actually defining the subject. In many cases this may in fact be due to the subject trying to push their own ideas, while others work diligently to refute them, but many such cases involve editors who have no affiliation with the subject other than a personal belief/disbelief in their work. A person's biography is not a good place to debate scientific theory or ideological beliefs; such debates belong in the articles that focus on those topics. For BLPs, it is enough to simply state what their views are and link to the articles which expand on those views. ~ (quote by Zaereth edited for brevity; Jimbo Wales agreed with Zaereth’s explanation.)

Politics, presidents and NPOV

I'd like to add that I don't mind a little bit of personal chit-chat here about politics, I'd like to always seek to tie it back to Wikipedia. We have chosen a very tough job: NPOV. Dislike for the President, fear about things that are happening in the world, may make it emotionally harder to remain neutral, but remain neutral we must. I happen to personally think that given the decline in quality of the media across the board (there are still fantastic journalists out there, but overall the landscape isn't great) the best way for us to help the world heal is neutrality.

Deprecated sources & when to IAR

Jimbo's response to an editor's statement to not cite The Daily Mail as a source in articles because it has been deprecated.
"No, that is not true. It is true that the Daily Mail is generally prohibited as a source, but in Wikipedia terminology that does not mean an absolute ban. Exceptions to the general rule can and do exist, per WP:IAR as well as general common sense in specific circumstances."
[3]--Jimbo Wales

Free thought isn't free anymore

“I have no beef with my colleagues, many of whom I admire and are friends,” Sullivan tweeted. “The underlying reasons for the split are pretty self-evident.” But he expressed solidarity with Weiss: “The mob bullied and harassed a young woman for thoughtcrimes. And her editors stood by and watched.” (Excerpt from NYTimes)

Writing for the opponent

"Writing for the opponent is an important trait of good editors. They must be able to divorce themselves from their own POV so much that they can bend over backwards to aid in the writing of content which documents views they do not like. They must never block the inclusion of content which opposes their own POV or political positions. If they cannot do this, they should recuse themselves from the topic and edit in other areas. Editors who are unwilling or unable to write for the opponent are incapable of truly understanding or abiding by the NPOV policy. As such they will always cause problems." When to turn in the bit

My views on this are quite simple. An admin telling a user to "grow the fuck up" is absolutely unacceptable under any circumstances and is ground for immediate desysopping. If we care about having a serious, thoughtful, kind, adult and mature community (which I assume was the sentiment behind that unseemly outburst) then we have to model that behavior ourselves as admins. There's a bit of sad irony in behaving in a juvenile and bullying fashion in an attempt to get others to behave better. Bwilkins, I recommend that you turn in your bit and take a break from being an admin for 6 months and then return if you feel you can handle the job in a more responsible fashion.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 13:49, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

How Woke Are We? (Wikipedia, not Justapedia)

”The encyclopedia’s reliance on outside sources, primarily newspapers, means it will be only as diverse as the rest of the media—which is to say, not very.” [1]

  • Re: the above Bloomberg article, "not very" is quite accurate, but I remain cautiously optimistic that once RECENTISM dies down, things will greatly improve.

"Since decisions are by those who participate in a localized discussion, leaving cedes the decision-making power to those willing to engage in the least logical and sane response. This incentivizes not just obsessive but also belligerent behavior and even harassment, and empowers those privileged with the time and resources to engage in this behavior. Minor quibbles about grammar is one thing, but these techniques are frequently used by political ideologues, ethnic nationalists, and conspiracy theorists. Atlas, when a new user already has a welcome template on their UTP, we don't add more templates below it as you did because they cannot reply to templates. Our welcome templates already contain the information necessary for new users, and some of those types of templates are used for "headers", not sections. If you want to be part of the welcoming committee, that's great - be the first to welcome our new users with a welcome template, but do not add more header templates after someone has already included the initial welcome header because they cannot reply in the same thread as a header template which is what you added. They have to start a new section below the header. Justme 💬 📧 12:26, 16 January 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Jordan Neely

For an encyclopedia with a relatively small contributor base I think it makes sense to show deference to the show-runner. That is you. You are probably paying most or all of the bills, right now. I plan to offer to chip in with a modest monthly contribution, soon. Even then I plan to show deference.

May I ask you for some clarification as to what happened to the Jordan Neely article? Am I correct that someone here started a Jordan Neely article, that you then moved it to draft space, because you thought it wasn't ready for article space, and then you subsequently changed the draft to a redirect to Daniel Penny#Neely's background, deleting the draft article, in the process?

I wrote a section Justapedia:The Exchange#Redirection to subsections within other articles... voicing my general concern over the practice of redirecting to subsections within other articles.

Wikipedia's BLP1E makes a big exception for people who, even though they became known for one event, when their role in that event was so significant they ended up measuring up to notability. I did a Google search for Neely. I think I see lots of indications Neely measures up to notability.

Deference.

I participated in the AFD on Bible story. Justapedia does have them. I am not going to challenge your authority to delete articles, outside of AFD, on your sole judgement, but, in order to understand our processes here, I would be interested in an explanation.

Thanks — Geo Swan (talk) 11:09, 19 January 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, Geo Swan, and my apologies for the tardy response. Big things are happening behind the scenes. Better yet, we anticipate even bigger things after we attend this event. As for our growth here on Justapedia, I've long since learned not to interrupt the enemy when they're making mistakes but I do believe in making it public in our Feature Showcase, so bring us some candidates. If you believe Jordan Neely should be a stand alone article, that's your decision. You are aware of JP's requirements for neutrality and objectivity, and that we want readers to make their own decisions based on the inclusion of the facts along with a balance of significant views with inline citations. I've got to get back to work on the graphics and other material we need for Feb 5th, as well as for interviews coming up soon following (to be announced on our x.com page). I was in his neck of the woods last year or year before last to see some horse show friends who moved down the street from him. We met at the Cowboy Emporium, and I took some iPhone photos. I'll upload what I can to Commons, but I'd have to check into some of the newer images. They should be old enough to either be out of or void of copyright. Under copyright laws that were in effect before 1978, a work that was published without copyright notice fell into the public domain. If the work did not include the word “Copyright” or a © (a “c” in a circle) and the name of the copyright owner, the work would enter the public domain. This rule was repealed; copyright notice is not required for works first published after March 1, 1989 (although works first published prior to that date must still include notice). I went ahead and uploaded before I finished typing this notice so here's the link. The other photos may fall under fair use, so I'll upload here. Justme 💬 📧 14:04, 11 March 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Draft:Vahid Beheshti

Can you (or anyone else here) review or proofread Draft:Vahid Beheshti so to make it ready for publication? Thank you in advance.— Ron Merkle (talk) 12:22, 11 April 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Your draft is published. You need to add categories, and specify if it's forked which means it contains original material by the author or if it's a new article about the same topic (forked article means there were no significant changes in the lead or body). If it's a completely rewritten article, then it's new. Just because it's about the same person doesn't make it a fork that needs attribution. Please understood that because topics are not copyrightable - only the way an author presents it is copyrightable. The topic or person an article is about is not copyrightable, neither are ideas. You are not obligated to attribute as forked if it's rewritten entirely. Also, don't use more than 3 citations for material that might be challenged, and please don't use the group citation template. Use Citer toolforge or our Citation Generator under Tools in the left margin. BTW...that is a good article about a great topic!! Justme 💬 📧 20:25, 11 April 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

This is a test using +

In user prefs, you can choose the + symbol for one of your tabs instead of using the edit source tab. I used the + tab this time, and there's no edit summary bar, which is a problem. Justme 💬 📧 13:28, 13 April 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Upgrade

Hey Justme - can you make me a template editor? Do I pass the test? Cheers! — StandiferG (talk) 10:12, 2 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Hmmm...promise to be nice? 😊 Justme 💬 📧 10:13, 2 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]
I do promise. Here's proof - Independence Day (Israel) – does it work? Cheers! — StandiferG (talk) 12:29, 4 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Waiting for response

Hello,

I am waiting for your response in Talk:Deir Yassin massacre before proceeding with adding the list again (in case of no objections) — ZeroDoxx (talk) 13:39, 6 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

New JustaProject

Hello,

Can you please make a new JustaProject for Israel-Palestine conflict? I posess great knowledge in the conflict and due to constantly debating it, I know both sides claims and how to present them equally. I think I would be a good candidate to manage the project. The project would have a list of biased articles or potentially biased articles - as well as all the other things that usual projects (like on wikipedia) have. Please let me know if you have any more questions about what I envision the project to be, and how we can make the visions possible — ZeroDoxx (talk) 18:41, 8 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Hi @ZeroDoxx,
Thank you for your message and for showing interest in contributing to this important topic. We currently have a page titled Justapedia:Project Israel, which already touches on related areas. It does need some updates, and I’ll be working on refining it shortly.
If you’d like to create a separate Justapedia Project focused on the Israel–Palestine conflict, you’re absolutely welcome to do so. Justapedia is an open space where everyone is encouraged to collaborate and build this encyclopedia the right way — together and with balance. We appreciate your initiative and look forward to your contributions. — Shahadat (talk) 02:34, 9 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]
I was not aware I can make a JustaProject myself. I am currently working on it following your reply. Thanks — ZeroDoxx (talk) 02:53, 9 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]
Good morning, everyone! Hi, ZeroDoxx, hope you're day started out with lots of sunshine. Our projects are simply called projects. For example, Justapedia:Project Dogs. Shahadat, thank you for your excellent response. Justme 💬 📧 09:30, 9 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Forked articles

Hi, Justme - (pinging Factsfirst if you're too busy) - I prodded 2 forked articles State of Palestine, and Islamberg because I rewrote both of them (you are right about Grok, great tool) so we can replace those forks. Thanks ahead of time! — GracieCasey (talk) 17:42, 11 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

please turn State of Palestine into a redirect — ZeroDoxx (talk) 04:37, 12 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]
Right now, we're having a crazy LUA issue in AfC that needs to be tended to first. I think it's preventing article submissions. Bear with us, please? Growing pains. Justme 💬 📧 20:56, 12 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

User rights upgrade

Hi. Can my privileges be upgraded to include createarticle? — Enki (talk) 12:34, 29 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

You can create an article at JP:AfC now, but I went ahead and gave you editor rights. Justme 💬 📧 22:20, 29 May 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Need delete of fork to make way for new bio

Pam Bondi is the article - it's completely rewritten in my TextEdit program. I'll tag it for speedy. Bambino 📢 📩 13:03, 9 June 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]

Draft:Luigi Mangione

You moved the article I created on Luigi Mangione to draft space. Recently a distinct Luigi Mangione article has been created. I'd like to compare my work to the new version, but Draft:Luigi Mangione no longer exists.

I request userification of my original version. — Geo Swan (talk) 12:29, 12 June 2025 (AST)Reply[reply]
