Monastiraki line 3 platforms

Monastiraki (Greek: Μοναστηράκι, lit.'Little Monastery') is an interchange station on the Athens Metro, between Lines 1 and 3.[1] The original surface station on Line 1 opened on 17 May 1895. It became an interchange point of the network when the underground station of Line 3 opened on 22 April 2003.[2] It is located in the historic center of Athens, near the neighborhood of Plaka. The station is right beneath the Acropolis and next to the site of the Ancient Agora of Athens.

History

Monastiraki opened as Monastirion (Greek: Μοναστηριών, lit.'Monasteries') on 17 May 1895, and Line 3 station followed over a century later, on 22 April 2003.[3][2] Signage for the former name remains in place on the Line 1 platforms.[4]
