Le Magasin pittoresque was a French magazine being published in 1833–1938 and headquartered in Paris, France. It was the first illustrated magazine in the country.[1]

History and profile

Le Magasin pittoresque was launched in 1833.[2] Its founder and editor was M. Édouard Charton.[1][2] The magazine was modelled on The Penny Magazine.[3] It was started as a weekly, but later its frequency was switched to bi-monthly and then to monthly.[2] The magazine was headquartered in Paris, France.[2] The topics covered included public administration, human and social sciences, urban planning, architecture, and civil engineering.[2]

Le Magasin pittoresque featured the first article about an mechanism, Mechanical Turk, which was developed by Hungarian inventor Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen.[4] The mechanism was able to play chess.[4]
