Florida's 4th congressional district has recently been redrawn by Governor Ronald DeSantis. In November, 2022, a new election will be held between Democrat L.J. Holloway and Republican Aaron Bean. The new district will encompass half of the western part of the City of Jacksonville in Duval County, and almost all of Clay and Nassau Counties, combining a big city with rural areas, "bedroom communities," and historic small towns.
More History of District 4 is below.
This "new" district is currently up for election in November, 2022. Currently, the old district was most of Jacksonville, along with parts of that city's northern and western suburbs and the city of St. Augustine. The district included all of Nassau County, most of Duval County, and part of St. Johns County.
The old district is currently represented by RepublicanJohn Rutherforduntil November 2022 Election, and swearing in of the new Congressional Representative. Republican John Rutherford is currently running in another district as of September, 2022. John Rutherford was elected after the retirement of fellow Republican Ander Crenshaw following the 2016 election.
Before 1993, most of the territory now in the 4th district was the 3rd district, represented by DemocratCharles Edward Bennett. He had held the seat and its predecessors since 1949, and was facing a stiff reelection contest against Republican Tillie K. Fowler in the 1992. Bennett retired after his wife fell ill, and Fowler easily defeated an underfunded replacement candidate. She became the first Republican woman to represent the district.
From 1967 to 1993, the 4th district stretched from the southern Jacksonville suburbs to the northern Orlando suburbs. Much of this area became the 7th District after redistricting, and is now the 6th District.
