Description
English: Queen Victoria’s Royal Charter authorizing the foundation of the Ottoman Bank (May 24, 1856). In 1855, two British entrepreneurs, Stephen Sleigh and Peter Pasquali, conceived a plan to establish an “Ottoman Bank.” The following year, the bank received its royal charter from Queen Victoria and started to operate in İstanbul. At the time of its establishment in 1856, the Ottoman Bank was a modest, private British bank trying to find a niche in the still underdeveloped Ottoman financial market.

Kraliçe Victoria tarafından verilen ve Ottoman Bank’ın 500.000 sterlin sermayeyle kurulmasını onaylayan ferman (24 Mayıs 1856) 1855 yılında Stephen Sleigh ve Peter Pasquali adlı iki İngiliz müteşebbisin hayali olarak başlayan Ottoman Bank projesi, bir yıl sonra Kraliçe Victoria’nın fermanıyla hayata geçirildi. İstanbul'da kurulan Ottoman Bank, tamamen İngiliz sermayesinin hâkim olduğu ve yeni gelişen Osmanlı bankacılık piyasasında yer edinmeye çalışan mütevazı bir özel banka olarak faaliyetlerine başladı.
