English: Ditch Jewel (Brachythemis contaminata) female, a dragonfly of polluted waters. Abdomen: 18- 20mm, Hind wing: 22-25mm. This species is very common along sewage canals, tanks, ponds and ditches. Sometimes huge congregations (>1000) gather in sewage treatment ponds. Flies very close to the ground and perches on aquatic weeds. Breeds in ponds, marshes and tanks. Widely distributed in the plains of Oriental region. Taken at Burdwan, West Bengal, India. |
