Bizcaya (Vizcaya in Spanish) was an association football representative team from Bilbao, Spain, specially created to take part in the 1902 Copa de la Coronación and the Copa del Rey 1907. In this respect, the team is similar to London XI. It intended to create a team especially for the tournament using the best players from each Bilbao-based club: Bilbao Football Club and Athletic Club in 1902, and Athletic Club and Unión Vizcaino in 1907.
Copa de la Coronación 1902
The best players of Athletic Club (founded in 1898) and Bilbao FC (founded in 1900) came together to form Bizcaya, which was one of the 5 teams that participated in the Copa de la Coronacion, and their campaign in the tournament could not have been more successful, as they thrashed Club Español 5-1 in the quarter-finals, got a resounding 8-1 win over New FC and in the final they beat Joan Gamper's FC Barcelona by a score of 2-1, thus winning the trophy. The final was held at the Hipódromo de la Castellana on 15 May 1902, and Bizcaya's lineup consisted of Luis Arana, Careaga, Larrañaga, Luis Silva, Goiri, Amado Arana, Cazeaux, Astorquia, Dyer, Ramón Silva and Walter Evans. Juan Astorquia, the then Athletic president, was also the captain and led by example, netting the opening goal of the final in the early stages of the game, and Armand Cazeaux scored the winner. On 24 March 1903, Bilbao FC and its associates were officially and definitively absorbed by Athletic Club.[1][2][3]
Copa del Rey 1907
The 1907 Club Bizcaya was formed by combining the best players from both Athletic Club and Unión Vizcaino. The tournament was a five-team league, of which Bizcaya and Madrid FC finished as joint winners, meaning a play-off had to be played on 30 March, which Madrid won 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from Manuel Prast.[4]
